I am Kimberly Briscoe, Community Archaeologist working on the Secrets of the High Woods project for the South Downs National Park.
I am writing to invite members of your local community to join an exciting three year community project, joint funded by the South Downs National Park and HLF, to explore the historical landscape of the High Woods area between the A3 and the A272 including parts in or near your parish. (Project boundary shown below)
I wondered if the project might be of interest and if so, if it would be possible to promote our upcoming event amongst your community via the Parish noticeboard and possibly the local Newsletter?
A quick background to the project, earlier this year, an aerial laser scanning survey, commonly known as lidar survey was undertaken over a large area of wooded estate land known as the High Woods. Aerial laser scanning survey allows archaeologists to ‘see through’ dense tree cover, revealing the archaeology of the forest floor beneath. The process has allowed thousands of new and unrecorded archaeological features to be revealed, across the project area.
Throughout this autumn we’re recruiting volunteers to help us research, understand and record this fascinating landscape through a combination of, archaeological field survey, archival research and oral history collection! Whether you enjoy romping around in the forest, researching your local history through public and private archives or recording oral histories and local memories is more your thing, anyone can get involved and help us to better understand our heritage.
To introduce the project we’re inviting people to anOpen Day on the 8th November in the South Downs Centre Hall, Midhurst to find more about the project and how they might like to get involved. This event will provide an opportunity to speak to the team, to find out more information about the project and have the opportunity to chat with current volunteers.  If you think your community might be interested, would it be possible for the project to prepare a short piece about the event in your newsletter and include the attached poster on your notice board?
Attached is a flyer for the Open Day, a leaflet and postcard to provide more information about the project.
