Over the past year Hyden WI members have held a variety of events, including coffee mornings, cake stalls and a strawberry cream tea, to raise funds towards the rebuilding of the Clanfield Scouts Group Hall, their original hall having been destroyed in an arson attack.  Our efforts raised a total of £1000 and at our meeting on 17th May 2010 a cheque was presented to Doris Barden, co-ordinator of fundraising for the rebuilding project, and Jane Hoon from the Clanfield Scouts Group.

A second snowfall!

5th January 2010; the second major snowfall of this winter, and causing a lot of disruption in the village this time. With the local schools closed, the A3(M) closed and the village all but inaccessible for a while, this is certainly not the "snow flurries" predicted in the weather forecasts. Indeed the BBC weather feed on the website front page was, on Tuesday afternoon, still predicting no snow till Wednesday.

When the snow came came, it came quickly: it settled within 30 minutes. This is possibly why so many people were caught out. A lot of effort today has gone into re-opening roads and retrieving abandoned cars and buses. A big thank you goes to all those who have been involved in the clear-up.

There are now a lot of snowmen around the village. Many have been made in pairs or family groups - such is the amount of snow available. (In our case it was because the head was too big and became a second body!). Following a poll on this website, the two snowmen at the pond have been named "Frosty and Icicle".

There are photos of snow scenes from around the village in an album.

We have added a section on the website for events in the village. It can be found from the menu under "Clanfield Village" then "Events in the village".

Did you arrange, or attend, an event in the village? Would you like to write a report for ther website? What we need is a short, simple report: ideally with a few photographs. Email us the details and we can add them to the website. Photographs will need to be around 500 pixels wide, but we can resize them if needed.

Carol Concert 2009

The annual Carol concert at the village pond was held on the evening of Friday 18th December. A good two inches of snow had fallen overnight, and as seems to have become the tradition, the pond was completely frozen over for the event. The floating crib didn't, in the event, need its polystyrene base...

Unfortunately we left it too late to make a snowman - although there was a lot of snow it had become too soft. the children at  CJS apparently made a super snowman during the day though!

Despite the bitter cold we had around 250 people at this year's concert. The Salvation army band played, and a choir from CJS sang. Glow sticks for children were popular - and made the order of service readable - and mince pies were available for all. Overall an excellent evening with a strong turnout.
